Tom Gilling began his writing career as a cadet journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald in the 1980s, then moved to the Bulletin as TV critic, feature writer and occasional theatre reviewer.

He has written three novels: THE SOOTERKIN, MILES MCGINTY and DREAMLAND. All three were published and reviewed widely overseas. THE SOOTERKIN and MILES MCGINTY were shortlisted for the NSW Premier s fiction prize and both were chosen as notable books of the year by the New York Times.

He has also written or co-written five books of non-fiction, including a series of true crime books with Clive Small published by Allen & Unwin. The first two, SMACK EXPRESS and BLOOD MONEY, were used as primary sources for Underbelly. He and Small have recently finished a history of the mafia in Australia which is due for publication in mid-2013.

Between books he works as a freelance journalist and reviewer and teaches in the creative writing department at UTS.
