Bernhard Schlink was born in Germany is 1944. A professor of law at Humboldt University, Berlin and Cardozo Law School, New York, he is the author of the major international bestselling novel and movie The Reader, short story collection Flights of Love and several prize-winning crime novels. He lives in Berlin and New York.

Walter Popp was born in Nuremberg in 1948. He studied law at the University of Erlangen and spent postgraduate and research time in both Cambridge, England and the USA, where he worked alongside Bernhard Schlink. In 1978, he started a law practice in Mannheim before moving to France in 1983. He now lives in a Proven al village with his teenage daughter and works as a translator.
