Ten years ago Kate Winters parents were taken when her town was raided by the High Council to help with the country's war effort. Now the wardens are back...

Under the cover of night, the town is raided and the prisoners, including Kate's uncle Artemis, are taken south upon the terrifying Night Train. Kate and her friend Edgar are hunted by a far more dangerous enemy. Silas Dane - one of the High Council's most trusted men - recognises Kate as one of the Skilled; a rare group of people able to see through the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead. His spirit has been damaged by the High Council's experiments into the veil, making him unable to die, and he kidnaps Kate hoping that she can undo the damage and allow him to find peace at last.

The knowledge Kate needs lies within Wintercraft - a lost book thought to be hidden somewhere deep beneath the graveyard city of Fume. But the Night of Souls is fast approaching - the time when the veil between life and death is at its thinnest - and the High Council have their own plans for Kate and for Wintercraft. If Kate is going to help Artemis, Edgar and herself, she must honour her pact with a murderer, uncover the secrets of Fume's ancient past, and come face to face with the true nature of death.
